Copyrights, Contracts, & Guidelines for Dinosaur Artists & Paleontologists

Part 2 Contracts
Television and
Film Contracts
I do not have the expertise to write authoritatively on negotiations in this part of the industry, so I asked William Stout if he would consider writing this chapter and he graciously consented. He directs his essay for this book at paleoartists, but his guidelines are also true for paleontologists working apart from their institutions on TV and film projects. His “$500. RULE” holds true for paleontologists working within their institutions as I mention in my later chapter, “Working For Free”.

TV and film are the areas of media most rapidly expanding their use of paleo expertise in products, and in which the entire paleo community most seriously undervalues itself. I am very grateful to William Stout for sharing with us his understanding of these media and how to negotiate with them.
