One Bit of Copyright Weirdness |
One Bit of Copyright Weirdness One strange thing about the Copyright Law which you ought to know about is this. If you are a dinosaur artist who takes a painting to a printer to have a limited edition print made of it, or if you are a sculptor who takes a sculpture to a foundry to have a cast made of it, you need to be aware that the Copyright Law considers that limited edition print and that cast to be separate works of copyrightable art owned by the printer and the foundry! This is to protect artists who pull their own prints and cast their own work, and that's a good thing. What it means to those of us who have this work done by others is that we need to have what I call a "foundryman's form" filled out. It's not that I think your foundryman or printer would jump your copyright, (although I know of an instance in California where a printer did.) I'm not even suggesting that I think most of them are aware of this legal loophole. I'm only saying that the law says they have every right to own your work unless you get them to sign this little form when you hire them to do your work. It's no trouble. You're both probably signing a lot of stuff at this time anyway, so "Just do it". |
