Copyrights, Contracts, & Guidelines for Dinosaur Artists & Paleontologists

Part 1 Copyrights
Your Life’s Work;
Contracts, Intellectual
Property, and the
Artist’s Estates
A copyright is a property right. You own it for your life and will it to your children. Creating a body of work and licensing copyrights is an extremely good way to generate passive income while the artist is alive, and provide a legacy for his/her family or a bequest to an institution after death. I know there are not many of you who consider your work in this way, but perhaps you should. Many of you are doing the first life restorations of new species. These works have a historical significance, even if later on, new evidence is found which indicates that they’re wrong! Look at how many books continue to print Charles R. Knight’s work regardless of the anatomical problems. His work, and quite probably, yours, has a continuing importance to the history of paleontology. Take your intellectual property seriously when signing a contract.
